The dispute of borders between India and Nepal started when Nepal released its new political map on date 20 May 2020 showing Lipulekh and Kalapani as a part of its territory. Let's discuss how this dispute started? and What is Border Discourse: India Vs Nepal?
Nepal:
Nepal is landlocked and a buffer country which means that it is surrounded by land by all four sides and lies between two major countries named India and China. To understand the seed of dispute between India and Nepal let's have a look at the history behind this dispute.
Do you know the history behind this dispute?
Nepal is the country which was never invaded by Mughals. Gorkha kingdom in Nepal was so strong that they invaded many parts of British India including Kumaun, Garhwal and Awadh. With the increasing power of the Gorkha Kingdom, Britishers in India raised a war which was called the Anglo-Nepalese War (1Nov.1814 -4 March 1816).
This war was won by the British resulting in a Treaty of Sugauli. Through this treaty, Nepal renounced its claim to the disputed Tarai and extended it's conquests to the west of Kali River and increasing to Sutlej river. So finally Nepal was between two Rivers named Kali and Mechi river after the treaty.
Do you know the purpose behind building the road near the border?
Indian deities were used to go from Sikkim to Mansarovar which is very long distance. Then Indian government thought why not to follow the shortest path which is from Lepulekh in Uttarakhand.
So BRO(Border Road Organization)started building a road of distance 80km from Kalapani to Lepulekh. So according to Nepal, India is making a road in their territory.
According to the treaty of Sugauli, Mahakali river would form a border between India and Nepal. But Mahakali river is formed by a combination of three Rivers named Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lepulekh.
According to India, river Mahakali is starting from Lepulekh. On the other hand, Nepal is saying that the Mahakali river is starting from Limpiyadhura. And therefore according to Nepal, India is building a road in their territory. This is the main reason behind the dispute.
